Medsquare at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR 2018): Patient dose monitoring and application of the Directive 2013/59/Euratom

At the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), Medsquare will present the latest features of its Radiation Dose Monitor (RDM) patient dose monitoring solution. Demonstrations will take place at Booth 515, Hall X5, from 1-4 March.

Medsquare will take the occasion of this year’s ECR to unveil the latest version of RDM, which brings new, completely redesigned and more intuitive features to healthcare professionals:

• Automatic dose report (Statistical Report and Patient Report)
• Organ dose: calculation of the organ dose in Nuclear Medicine and in scanner
• Effective dose: calculation of the effective dose in Nuclear Medicine and in scanner
• Simulation tools for organ dose and effective dose
• Pivot table: ability to have synthetic tables, which facilitate the interpretation and relevance of the dose data

Meanwhile, among the many abstracts that have been submitted to the European Society of Radiology (ESR)’s scientific committee, Lama Hadid-Beurrier, Medical Physicist at Lariboisière Hospital, has been chosen to present the first results of the scientific study validating RDM’s Peak Skin Dose module on Wednesday, 28 February. The scientific study was conducted in France with the participation of three other public hospitals of the APHP, Jean-Verdier, Kremlin-Bicêtre and Necker-Enfants malades. Lama Hadid-Beurrier explains. “RDM’s skin dose calculation module is a key tool for improving the follow-up of patients in interventional radiology, particularly those who have exceeded the alert threshold for the appearance of deterministic effects. In addition, RDM’s interactive skin dose mapping is a valuable means for educating professionals on radiation protection of patients and enhancing the quality of practices. These principles will be the subject of particular attention in the forthcoming regulatory settlement resulting from the transposition of the Directive 2013/59/Euratom, which sets the new basic standards in radiation protection.”

Directive 2013/59/Euratom: a new step toward patient radiation protection

“While the latest advances in the field of radiology and medical imaging will mark the highlights of this congress, it should be noted that the main concerns are now focused on radiation protection,” says Karen Frangié, Medsquare’s Communication Leader, emphasizing that this major issue has triggered a global call for healthcare professionals to adhere to the principles of radiation protection following the new Directive 2013/59/Euratom.

Indeed, the 6 February 2018 deadline for Member States to transpose the Directive 2013/59/Euratom into national law has come into effect. From now on, optimization, justification, and traceability of the dose, and evaluation of professional practices are concepts that healthcare organizations must keep in mind. The RDM solution plays a key role in this new legislation − not only by virtue of its multiple features, but also by being the solution of compliance with the Directive 2013/59/Euratom.
